This year’s Arts rep is Harry Beadell, who can be contacted via email.
The Arts’ presence in medicine is surprisingly significant, for whilst often overlooked, it is what drives efficient patient communication and thus diagnosis. It is essential for any Doctor to be able to empathise and sympathise with patients and have an excellent bedside manner. Utilising a humanitarian approach to medicine therefore is key, and this is where the Arts come in.
The Arts can help medical students enormously in a visual and practical sense, for example, music can reduce stress whilst boosting creativity. Often, medical students are so busy they don’t have time to enjoy their musical or creative hobbies outside their studying – this is what I hope to change!
As your Arts rep, it is my job to broaden your creative character and encourage you to participate in extra-curricular clubs and activities and get everyone involved in something. We have put on events such as medical BSL sessions, a choir for the Welcome Event and have started filming for a LMS promotional video. If you’re wanting to join or create an Arts-related society, activity or event then I’m your port of call.
If you haven't done so already, please fill in the Arts Survey, which can be found here. It will let me know of your interests and what you want to do arts-wise as a medical student. Thanks! Please note, that as MedSoc has only been recently established, the following societies are in planning and do not exist yet. If you are interested in any of the plans we have, please fill in the arts survey as it will be a huge help!

ART
Lincoln Medical School Artwork
As you know we are getting close to the completion of the new building and as such we are now starting to look at the artwork we are wanting to feature in it. Our first project is to have a mural completed that will be situated on the available wall space on the ground floor. We would like to invite your thoughts and ideas on both what theme this mural could take and the content that may be included in it. We have developed a survey which you can access here which we invite you to complete by Friday, 26th February 2021.
If you have any images, pictures or websites that have ideas that you would like to raise to our attention please email these back to us at medicine@lincoln.ac.uk for us to consider.
Similarly, if you would be interested in being part of the group who will help to develop the options that we will propose for the mural please email back to us and let us know. We would be aiming to have the mural in place for the start of the new academic year.
Thank you and we look forward to receiving your thoughts.
Best wishes
Laura Bennett, LMS Operations Manager and Harry Beadell, University of Lincoln Medical Society Arts Representative

Medical Art Society - Upcoming
The Medical Art Society is intended to combine any student's passion for art, medicine and anatomy. The vast majority of students studying the human body will use anatomical diagrams, drawings and 3D models to develop their understanding of structure position and arrangement. Anatomical artists will have a deep understanding of anatomy, as well as the skills to represent it in various forms of media. Whilst it is important to distinguish the difference between 'scientific drawings' and 'art', the two often overlap, and we want members to be as creative as possible.
In time, sessions would hopefully involve a different focus each time, such as the skeleton, the muscular system, the circulatory system, etc. We would look at the structures involved in these systems, such as bones, the heart, veins & arteries and so, utilising a range of 3D models and props, whilst also learning a bit about the anatomy and its function.
Please note that this society is currently in planning, however you can make it a reality by filling in the arts survey.

PERFORMING ARTS
Lincoln Artbeats - Upcoming Society
We are aiming to create the Lincoln Artbeats, which will be our medic's performing arts society, and in time, will produce the annual Lincoln Medic's Musical / Pantomime. For now, we're aiming to put on several small-scale plays, comedy skits & sketches and a variety of fun performances throughout the year. The Artbeats will be welcome to all, but as a MedSoc affiliated society, our sessions and rehearsals are intended to work alongside the medical students' timetable. We will be working closely with the musical medics, and most likely there will be many students who are members of both societies. Please note that this society is currently in planning, however you can make it a reality by filling in the arts survey. |
MUSIC
Musical Medics - Upcoming Society
Do you fancy performing in an orchestra alongside your fellow medics? What about singing in a choir or an acapella group, or even jazzing it up with Big Band? The Musical Medics will comprise all the Med Soc musical ensembles and will be for any student wanting to combine their passion for music with their studies. (Unfortunately we cannot loan out instruments).
Please note that this society is currently in planning, however you can make it a reality by filling in the arts survey. |
